Trip Prep: A Checklist for Traveling Internationally 🌍

The reservations are confirmed, and your flights have been secured for months. Now, as you enter the final month countdown, there's much more to consider than just packing your clothes (though careful packing is crucial!). You'll need a plan for money, phone plans, insurance, pet sitters, and more. Here are essential areas to focus on before embarking on your next international adventure.

πŸ’Έ Money Matters

  • Local Currency: In some countries, having local currency is essential. While you can exchange money upon arrival, having cash immediately after disembarking can ease stress. For my previous trips, I have used a service I found on my bank’s website to order international currency, delivered to my doorstep. Though it might not be the cheapest option, it was convenient. For Vietnam, I ordered $300, costing me $17 for delivery. I used Ceifx, but there are many other options like Bank of America for their customers. Consider a travel debit card for ATM use abroad with minimal fees.

  • Credit Cards: Many travelers prefer credit cards for purchases abroad. The Chase Sapphire card is popular among those playing the travel points game, rewarding users for travel-related purchases like flights and hotels, plus offering travel protections. Notify your bank or credit card company about your travel plans.

πŸ“± Technology Essentials

  • Chargers: I like to keep all cables and a charging block in a small zippered bag - all together in one place and easy to throw in. Charge all devices ahead of time and bring a portable charger. Use caution with public charging stations due to potential malware risks. It’s safer to recharge your portable charger at these stations.

  • International Power Adapter: Always pack an international power adapter to connect to any outlet worldwide.

  • Travel Apps: Here are some travel apps to consider:

    • Polarsteps: Polarsteps tracks your journey and creates a cool map of your trip. You can add photos and notes for a personal travel log. Follow my journey through Vietnam!

    • Google Maps: Useful for navigation. Download city maps when on Wi-Fi for offline use to save data and battery.

    • Smart Traveler: Provides real-time travel advisories from the US Department of State.

  • WIFI/Phone Plan: Researching this can be overwhelming. If an international phone plan seems pricey, consider an eSIM. A friend recommended aloSIM, known as "ideal for budget-savvy travelers."

✈️ In-flight Comfort and Entertainment

  • Entertainment: It is a good idea to curate playlists, and download music, podcasts, and audiobooks before your flight. I also like to bring headphones/earbuds and a couple of lightweight books. A fun magazine can also be a great companion.

  • Comfort: As I age, comfort during travel becomes more vital. I'm trying FlyKitt for jetlag and have purchased compression socks and Firefly for swollen ankles. I plan to test both on my upcoming flights. Stay tuned for the results!

πŸͺͺ Other Important Details

  • Travel Documents: Ensure your passport is valid for six months beyond your stay with blank pages for stamps. Check visa and vaccination requirements for the countries you will be visiting on the Department of State website. I prefer having printed copies of hotel and tour confirmations alongside digital versions for easy access.  It is also recommended to travel with digital and paper copies of your passport and visa.

  • Weather Check: Review the forecast a day or two before departure. This can impact last-minute packing decisions. I always pack a raincoat and swimsuit, just in case.

This checklist covers many essentials, but remember, every trip is unique! Remember to handle those important personal details like refilling prescriptions, arranging pet care, and sharing your travel plans with friends or family. These are just a few steps I'm focusing on as I prepare for my next exciting adventure. 🌟
